Election day: June 9, 2024

Deadline: March 26, 2024

The term of office of the European Parliament lasts five years; the election will be held in all member states during the same period: from June 6th to 9th, 2024. In Austria, the election date is (formally) set by the federal government. As part of this call for proposals, a deadline will also be set according to various deadlines relating to the implementation of the European elections.

For Austria, a total of 20 members of the European Parliament can be elected in the European elections on June 9, 2024 for the electoral period 2024-2029.

You are entitled to take part in the 2024 European elections (active voting rights) if you

turn 16 no later than on the day of the election (June 9, 2024), i.e. celebrate your 16th birthday on this day at the latest

Are an Austrian or Union citizen with their main residence in Austria or are an Austrian living abroad

are registered in the European voter register of an Austrian municipality on the deadline (March 26, 2024) and

There is no reason for exclusion from voting in connection with a court conviction.

In order to be elected in the European elections (passive right to vote), an applicant must be actively entitled to vote in the European elections and must also have reached the age of 18 no later than on the day of the election (i.e. no later than June 9, 2024). Celebrate your 18th birthday). There must be no exclusion from eligibility.

The legal basis for the holding of a European election is the (Council) Act introducing direct universal elections of the Members of the European Parliament (Council Decision of September 20, 1976, 76/787/ECSC, EEC, Euratom), last amended by the Decision ( EU, Euratom) 2018/994 of the Council of July 13, 2018 (although this amendment did not enter into force due to a lack of ratification by all EU Member States). Voting by Union citizens who do not live in the Member State of origin but in another Member State of the European Union is regulated by Council Directive 93/109/EC of December 6, 1993 as amended by Directive 2013/1/EU of December 20 2012 (OJ L 26, 26.1.2013, p. 27).

Domestically, the conduct of a European election is regulated by the European election regulations. Another legal source is the European Voter Records Act, on the basis of which our own European voter records are maintained, taking into account the above-mentioned directive for European elections.

The 2024 European elections will take place according to the following principles

proportional representation (the mandates to be awarded are determined using the d'Hondt method; “4 percent hurdle”);

the federal territory is a unified electoral body;

Preferential votes can be awarded by entering them on the ballot paper; Preferential votes amounting to 5 percent of the valid votes cast on the party list are required for pre-ranking;

A valid election proposal requires the signature of at least three members of the National Council or the signature of an Austrian member of the European Parliament or the submission of 2,600 declarations of support;

Election day is a Sunday or a public holiday

The form for a declaration of support that can be filled out and saved is available here (1 MB).

As already stated above, in a European election, in addition to those eligible to vote living in Austria (these are identical to those eligible to vote in a National Council election), there are also the Austrians abroad registered in the European Voters Register and the Union citizens with their main residence entered in this register eligible to vote in Austria. You can find more information on this on the pages Information for Austrians Abroad and Information for Non-Austrian Union Citizens.

When conducting a European election, the electoral authorities at all levels (district electoral authorities, municipal electoral authorities, district electoral authorities, state electoral authorities and the federal electoral authority) act in the compositions in which they have been in office since the last National Council election.

As far as the administration of voting is concerned, a European election is essentially similar to a federal presidential election. This concerns - in principle - the possibility of voting by postal vote or before another electoral authority using a voting card, in particular by bedridden people before a flying electoral authority.

The regulations regarding the prohibited zones correspond to those for National Council elections; There is no alcohol ban in European elections - as in all other elections. There is also no compulsory voting.
