Good for nature and the environment, beautiful for the landscape and garden

Dry stone wall course on Rinderberg

Anyone can learn the artistic craft of dry stone walling: embankment walls, herb spirals, benches, niches or stairs can be created from natural stone without any tools.

From May 23rd to 25th, 2022, the Klein-Pöchlarn Village Renewal Association and the Krems Viticulture School invite you to a three-day dry stone wall course. The explanation of construction technology, lots of practice on walls and decorative elements and an extensive picture lecture make the course an experience. Sufficient food and drink is provided during the course.

“The oldest stone buildings have been standing for well over 5,000 years and are still standing,” says course leader Rainer Vogler. “The durability of embankments is greater than that of a concrete wall because of their elasticity and water permeability. Dry stone walls are suitable for grounds or gardens because of both their durability and their ecological benefits.” A stone wall only uses a tenth of the energy of modern prefabricated building materials. It is a valuable supplementary biotope for hundreds of plant and animal species and a visual eye-catcher.

“Apart from the exercise in nature and the many ideas for your own garden, every course group always has fun and entertainment,” says Vogler, giving a foretaste of the course from May 23rd to 25th.

“Where the course takes place there are centuries-old dry stone walls. Because until around 150 years ago there was viticulture on the southern slopes of Kleinpöchlarn,” says initiator Walter Seiwald from the village renewal association. “We have been working on rebuilding walls for years; last year the “Leuthäusl” was renovated. The dry stone walls fit the Rinderberg not only historically, but ecologically. The latter is home to a rich diversity of protected species, and dry stone walls are unbeatable as a diverse habitat.” And Seiwald knows what he is talking about: he has been enthusiastically building stone walls in Kleinpöchlarn for 9 years.
