Hedge day 2024:
A piece of truly regional nature for the garden at home
November 9, 2024 is Hedge Day again in eastern Austria and is therefore an important day for numerous nature lovers and passionate hobby gardeners to protect the local flora and fauna. Here, garden fans from Vienna, Lower Austria and northern Burgenland get their trees and shrubs from truly regional origins and make a valuable contribution to vibrant biodiversity. You can pre-order the coveted plants from September 1st.
The Hedge Day was launched by the Regional Wood Growth Association (RGV) in order to promote biodiversity and maintain an intact habitat for local animals and plants in the long term. RGV chairman Andreas Patschka says: “From collection to rearing and planting, we rely on the natural power of the genetic diversity of our regions. As descendants of wild-growing mother stocks, our plants are perfectly adapted to local soils and climatic conditions and are therefore much more resilient than the classic imported plants.”
And the Lower Austrian bees also apparently like home cooking better than imported food sources, as Patschka explains: “In the course of evolution, bees and other beneficial insects have developed together and are perfectly coordinated with each other. A large variety of native species also attracts a large number of pollinators to your own fruit and vegetable garden.”
Large selection of regional trees
This year, too, the Heckentag range offers garden lovers a diverse selection of local, regionally propagated wild trees, fruit bushes and fruit trees. Including numerous rarities as well as the wild tree of the year 2024: the sweet chestnut! For this occasion, the RGV professionals have dedicated a separate monograph to her, which provides inquisitive woody fans with a lot of useful knowledge about the noble wild tree. And anyone who orders a sweet chestnut can be doubly happy, because the informative work comes free with the local chestnut.
Pre-orders from September 1st
For everyone who wants to secure the coveted RGV-grown shrubs and trees, things will get serious from September 1st. The diverse range can then be pre-ordered in the Heckentag web shop. “If requested, we can deliver the plants to your door from the beginning to mid-November for a small shipping fee. But of course we are even more pleased to see familiar faces again on Hedge Day and to have a personal dialogue with our committed supporters,” says Patschka, looking forward to the event and adding: “In any case, the bare-rooted trees should be installed as quickly as possible Earth is coming, autumn is the best time for that.”
Handover of the trees on Hedge Day 2024
The trees ready for planting will be handed over to locations throughout Lower Austria on this year's Hedge Day, November 9th. The perfect setting for nature lovers and garden professionals to exchange ideas with like-minded people and further deepen their knowledge of the impressive diversity of the local flora.

The Regional Wood Propagation Association (RGV)
In the Regional Wood Propagation Association, collectors, ecologists, farmers and partner tree nurseries work to collect and propagate unusual and rare trees as well as commonly encountered native tree and shrub species. The club members collect the ripe fruits of the wild bushes and trees by hand, obtain regional seeds from them and grow the young plants with a lot of love. This creates wild trees of unique quality that impress with their growth and resilience and bring great diversity to every garden
bring.
